The Omnitrol Networks/British Telecom Global Services (NYSE: BT) alliance has a bold objective: the real-time end-to-end supply-chain visibility (or “global track and trace”) that has proven so elusive.

It has proven elusive because it is a tall order. The supply chain stretches from the “vendors’ vendors to the customers’ customers”, as the Supply Chain Council’s SCOR model describes it. It is difficult enough to trace those relationships in an enterprise system, or even a company phone directory—how is it possible to do so with Auto ID technology?

RFID World 2008There was a healthy enthusiasm about the RFID industry and its direction, based on feedback we heard from attendees at the 2008 RFID World Conference in Las Vegas, NV – no longer that cautious enthusiasm of RFID’s earlier days (“we’ll have to work the kinks out,” “this won’t take off till it costs a nickel”). This is great news, especially in view of the the current economic crunch. The majority of attendees we spoke to are looking for solutions to specific business problems facing their organization and they believe RFID is just what they need.

Recent media reports detailing a series of quality problems with Chinese-made exports — pet food tainted with prohibited chemicals, toys covered with lead paint and tires that fall apart at high speed — have understandably alarmed the American public and resulted in a number of international product recalls. But supply chain professionals not directly affected by these recalls remain unusually calm. "Everything will be all right," said one U.S. importer on a buying mission to China . "As the country continues to develop, the quality of its products will naturally rise."
